Claude Sr took Marni, Scott, and Steve to Europe in the summer of 1966.
Steve recalls (from age 5):
Kaeti was age one and stayed behind with Claude Jr and grandmother Irma.
We flew on 707’s and DC-8’s. Pan Am I think. It was freezing getting off the plane in London.
In London, we stayed in the Brown’s hotel and took a chauffered trip in the country in a 50’s Rolls-Royce.
In Paris, we went to Napoleon’s tomb, took the elevators up the Eiffel Tower, and Claude Sr refused to get in a Ford taxi. He said, “I want to ride in a Citroen!” Claude Sr took Marni to the Folies Bergere and Scott and Steve had a very sweet French babysitter.
In Berlin everyone said the air was so clean they should bottle it. I remember overeating and throwing up.
In Rome, the Hilton hotel had amazing fountains and pools.
In Venice, I remember a boat ride, a gondola ride, and people were eating squid which was alarming.
In Madrid, we had a chauffeur that drove a Cadillac. I had a game hen or other small chicken for dinner with an attendant who carved it for me. The staff was amazed I could eat the whole thing. We went to a gift shop and I got castanets which we had for a long time but I could never play correctly.
I heard once that the cost of the trip was about $30,000.
