Steve was in his prime from about age 43 to 49. My fastest 10K was when I was 46, about 48 minutes. I could bench press 205 lbs when I was 49. Shortly afterward, I got some tendinitis and had to drop bench press weight down to 110 lbs.
Here’s a typical week when I was 43 back in May 2004 based on my journal.
Work 5 days 8 to 5 at IBM building 200 as UNIX team leader.
Growing spinach.
Go to the “Y” at lunchtime for a workout Monday, and play IBM volleyball Monday night.
Tuesday night, volunteer driving for the blood center followed by a 6 pack of beer.
Wednesday Eric and Allen came for dinner.
Thursday was tennis with Jenny for 2 hours. (She had great endurance)
Friday I hosted a reception for work people and drank more beer.
Saturday I went out on a date and only drank iced tea.
Sunday I read the paper, mowed, and took Dad for lunch at McDonald’s.
I didn’t always have near this much activity. I noted that I was struggling to stay content. IBM had given me another raise, but the environment with management was so stifling that I hated it. I noted that I was in a rut, but an awfully nice one. I was concerned that I might never be content in life.
The next week I had to spend ten hours on the phone on Saturday with a work problem, but the restlessness subsided and I felt more content.
