Dear Bob,
August 12,1991
Thanks for the nice newsy report on the wedding. Aunt Esther is one
tough little lady. Uncle Lou was pretty fanatical about his own
physical conditioning.
George Grothen passed away recently. He had a stubborn will to live
has amazed the doctors. He must have been very popular because the
church was filled at his funeral service.
Scott gave up the Alabama situation. He is now living in Nebraska
and working to help Conrad on the farm. This constant shifting from
job to job is preventing him from building financial security.
hope that he gets settled down.
Dear Daniel,
It sounds like you are having a worthwhile summer. I admire your
initiative in taking the computer programming course. I’m sure that
the cross-country school was a lot of fun. I hope that you will
enjoy school and the cross-country running is a big part of it.
I hope that you are all well, including the dogs.
Love, Claude
Dear Bob,
December 24, 1991
Thank you for the letter. The time and effort you spend on these
letters is appreciated very much. They make me feel like I’m part
of the family. Thanks also for the suitable card, the generous
check, and the photo of Daniel — he looks handsome.
I agree that Phil and Barbara are upbeat people. The news about
Joe Lundergan is sad — he was always a heck of a nice guy.
I hope that you don’t get laid off. The cases of Joe Lundergan
and David Zwart make us realize that life is fleeting and not
certain. Please tell Daniel that I agree with his decision to
give up the wrestling — it’s a grueling sport and a person won’t
do well at it unless you really enjoy it.
Steve got another promotion at IBM. He is doing quite well in my
estimation. He is a lot sharper than I was; he has much more on
the ball.
It is about 2 months before Kaeti is due to deliver her first
child; she is pleasurably excited. Scott worked at helping Conrad
bring in the harvest. Now he is staying with Kaeti and John while
he figures out his next move. I think that that he needs to
get something and stick to it in order to build financial security.
I got a complete physical. I’m in good shape except for high cholesterol
in the blood. The doctor put me on a diet. I’m supposed to lose
10 to 15 pounds over a 3-month period. I hate dieting but I should
be glad there is nothing seriously wrong with me. I weighed in at
214.
I quit smoking 2 years ago and I think it is that plus my
medicines which are responsible for the weight gain.
I want to say thanks for the many kindnesses you have extended
to me since my divorce. You deserve an A+ rating as a brother.
Also please express my appreciation to Margaret. I know that
I wasn’t easy to cope with.
Love, Claude
